Anorexia NervosaDescription Anorexia nervosa is dissatisfaction with one's body particularly towards weight and looks. It is often accompanied with significant weight loss and amenorrhea (in females), not due to physical disease. Causes The cause of anorexia nervosa is unknown. It is thought to be largely emotional. Co-morbid major depression and/or dysthymia (severe depression with poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or hypersomnia, low energy or fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration, difficulty making decisions, and feelings of hopelessness) is present in 50-75% of patients. Obsessive-compulsive disorder are present in 10-13% of patients. Risk factors include: Perfectionistic personality; Low self-esteem; Achievement pressure; high self-expectations; Acceptance of the culturally condoned ideal of slimness; Ambivalence about dependence/independence; Stress due to multiple responsibilities, tight schedules; Unstable body image; perceptual distortions; and Early puberty.
