Ulcerative ColitisDescription Ulcerative colitis is one of a group of inflammatory bowel diseases of unknown etiology characterized by intermittent bouts of inflammation of all or portions of the colon. Ulcerative colitis presents with recurrences of rectal bleeding and various constitutional symptoms (such as arthritis and inflammation of the eyes). The predominant age for ulcerative colitis is between the ages of 15 and 35 years.There is a positive family history in 8-11%. Ulcerative colitis is more common in Jews. Causes The cause is unknown, although genetic, infectious, immunologic, and psychological factors have all been suggested.
