Description

An antacid is any substance, generally a base, which counteracts or neutralizes stomach acidity.

Antacids are taken by mouth to relieve heartburn (the major symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease), or acid indigestion.

Side Effects

abdominal pain, agitation, alopecia, constipation, delirium, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, hallucinations, headache, impotence, insomnia, libido decrease, nausea/vomiting, paranoia, pruritus, urticaria,

Drug-Vitamin-Herb Interactions


Negative interactions:

Calcium citrate
Calcium citrate may increase the absorption of aluminum found in many antacids.


Positive interactions:

Folate
Antacids that reduce stomach acid interefere with folate absorption.
