Antacids, Tums, Maalox, Mylanta Description An antacid is any substance, generally a base, which counteracts or neutralizes stomach acidity. Antacids are taken by mouth to relieve heartburn (the major symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease), or acid indigestion. Aluminum hydroxide (Amphojel AlternaGEL) Magnesium hydroxide (PhillipsÕ Milk of Magnesia) Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide (Maalox, Mylanta) Aluminum carbonate gel (Basajel) Calcium carbonate (Tums, Titralac¨, Calcium Rich Rolaids, Rennie, Alcalak) Sodium bicarbonate (Bicarbonate of soda, Alka-Seltzer) Hydrotalcite (Mg6Al2(CO3)(OH)16 á 4(H2O); Talcid) Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) Action Antacids Indications aspiration prophylaxis, duodenal ulcer, esophagitis, gastric ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), multiple endocrine adenoma syndrome, NSAID-induced ulcer prophylaxis, systemic mastocytosis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Side Effects abdominal pain, agitation, alopecia, constipation, delirium, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, hallucinations, headache, impotence, insomnia, libido decrease, nausea/vomiting, paranoia, pruritus, urticaria, Drug-Vitamin-Herb Interactions Negative interactions: Calcium citrate Calcium citrate may increase the absorption of aluminum found in many antacids. Positive interactions: Folate Antacids that reduce stomach acid interefere with folate absorption.
