Celecoxib, Celebrex, Celebra Description Celecoxib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute pain, painful menstruation and menstrual symptoms, and to reduce numbers of colon and rectum polyps in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis. Action NSAID, Antirheumatic Indications rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis Side Effects Edema (swelling of face, fingers, feet, and/or lower legs), skin rash, upper, respiratory tract infection (cough, fever, sneezing, sore throat), Bronchitis (congestion in chest) cough), dyspnea (shortness of breath), gastritis, (burning feeling in chest or stomach, tenderness in stomach area), gastroenteritis (severe stomach pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea,, weakness), gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration (bloody or black, tarry, stools, vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds), influenza-like symptoms (chills. fever, muscle aches and pains), tachycardia (fast, heartbeat), unusual weight gain, Back pain, diarrhea, dizziness, dyspepsia (heartburn), flatulence, (gas), headache, insomnia (inability to sleep), nausea, pharyngitis (pain, or burning in throat), rhinitis (runny nose), sinusitis (stuffy or runny, nose, headache), stomach pain, Anxiety, anorexia (decreased appetite), arthralgia (joint or muscle pain or, stiffness), asthenia (loss of energy or weakness), blurred vision, constipation, depression, dry mouth, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing),, esophagitis (pain or burning in throat); fatigue (unusual tiredness), fever, hot flashes (sudden sweating and feelings of warmth), increased sweating, nervousness, palpitations (pounding heartbeat), paresthesias (numbness or, tingling in fingers and/or toes), somnolence (sleepiness), taste perversion, (change in sense of taste), tendonitis (joint pain or stiffness), tinnitus, (buzzing or ringing noise in ears), vertigo (dizziness), vomiting, Drug-Vitamin-Herb Interactions Negative interactions: Arginine Arginine stimulates gastrin production which increases stomach acid. This can irritate the stomach. Feverfew Feverfew has similar actions. Combining Feverfew with NSAIDs may increase the risk of side effects. Natural blood thinners: Garlic, Ginkgo, Vitamin E, Policosanol, Dong quai, Ginger, Horse chestnut, Red clover, Fish oils, and OPCs. Natural blood thinners may increase the tendency to bleed, a side effect of NSAIDs. Potassium, magnesium, and calcium citrate Citrates alkalinize the urine which decrease the therapeutic effect of NSAIDs and ASA. St JohnÕs Wort and Dong quai St JohnÕs Wort and Dong Quai can cause sensitivity to sunlight, which may add to side effects of NSAIDs. Positive interactions: Cayenne Cayenne may help prevent gastric bleeding. Colostrum Colostrum may help protect against ulcers caused by NSAIDs. Folate Folate may be depleted by NSAIDs. Licorice (DGL) Licorice (DGL) may help protect the stomach against gastric damage caused by NSAIDs. Vitamin C Vitamin C may be depleted by NSAIDs.
