Furazolidone, Furoxone Description Furazolidone is an antibiotic used to treat diarrhea and enteritis caused by bacteria or protozoan infections Action antibiotic Indications Side Effects Hypotension, urticaria, fever, arthralgia, colitis, proctitis, anal pruritus, nausea/vomiting, headache, malaise, disulfiram-like reaction, hemolysis in G6PD deficiency. Drug-Vitamin-Herb Interactions Negative interactions: Asian ginseng One report reported that Asian ginseng (Panax) combined with phenelzine caused headaches and trembling. Ephedra Ephedra contains ephedrine. MAO inhibitors block the degradation of epinephrine. Combining both may cause hypertension. Green tea Green tea contains caffeine which promotes the release of catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine). 5-HTP 5-HTP may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome associated with MAO inhibitors. SAMe SAMe may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome associated with MAO inhibitors. Scotch broom Scotch broom contains tyramine, which can elevate blood pressure when combined with MAO Inhibitors. St JohnÕs Wort St JohnÕs Wort may elevate serotonin levels, which increases the risk of serotonin syndrome associated with MAO Inhibitors. Positive interactions: Vitamin B6 MAO inhibitors attach to and disable vitamin B6.
