Description

Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic drug that acts by inhibiting the kidney's ability to retain water, which reduces the volume of the blood, decreasing peripheral vascular resistance.

diabetes insipidus, edema, hypercalciuria, hypertension, premenstrual syndrome (PMS),

Side Effects

agranulocytosis, anorexia, aplastic anemia, azotemia, blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, exfoliative dermatitis, glycosuria, headache, hemolysis, hypercalcemia, hypercholesterolemia, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperuricemia, hypochloremia, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hyponatremia, hypotension, impotence, interstitial nephritis, jaundice, leukopenia, nausea/vomiting, orthostatic hypotension, pancreatitis, pancytopenia, paresthesias, photosensitivity, polyuria, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, vertigo, weakness, xanthopsia,
Hyponatremia (low sodium): confusion; convulsions; decreased mentation; fatigue; irritability; muscle cramps
Hypokalemia (low potassium): dryness of mouth; increased thirst; irregular heartbeat; mood or mental changes; muscle cramps or pain; nausea or vomiting; unusual tiredness or weakness; weak pulse
Agranulocytosis (low neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils): fever or chills; cough or hoarseness; lower back or side pain; painful or difficult urination
Thrombocytopenia: unusual bleeding or bruising; black, tarry stools; blood in urine or stools; pinpoint red spots on skin
Orthostatic hypotension: dizziness or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position
Gout or hyperuricemia: joint pain, lower back or side pain

Drug-Vitamin-Herb Interactions


Negative interactions:

Calcium
Thiazide diuretics promote calcium retention, which increases levels.

Licorice
Licorice contains glycyrrhizin which promotes potassium loss, adding to the side effects of thiazide diuretics.

St JohnÕs Wort and Dong quai
St JohnÕs Wort and Dong quai may cause sensitivity to sunlight, adding to side effect of loop diuretics.


Positive interactions:

Magnesium, Potassium and Zinc
Thiazide diuretics promote magnesium, potassium and zinc loss, possibly leading to deficiency.
