Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (IDDM) have an absolute deficiency of the hormone and depend on exogenous insulin (commonly injected subcutaneously) for their survival. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (NIDM) have either relatively low insulin production or insulin resistance or both. Action antidiabetic Indications diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperkalemia, nutritional supplementation, Side Effects hyperinsulism, hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, injection site reaction, insulin resistance, nausea/vomiting, pruritus, sinus tachycardia, Somogyi effect, Drug-Vitamin-Herb Interactions Negative interactions: Ipriflavone Ipriflavone may increase the effects of antidiabetics which may cause hypoglycemia. Potassium citrate Potassium citrate may decrease levels of sulfonylurea antidiabetic drugs. St JohnÕs Wort and Dong quai St JohnÕs Wort and Dong quai may cause sensitivity to the sun, adding to side effect of antidiabetics. Mixed interactions: Chromium Chromium improves blood sugar control, which may cause hypoglycemia with antidiabetic agents.
