| Interferon Beta-1a, Avonex Description interferon beta-1a is used in MS Action interferon beta-1a is used in MS Indications MS Side Effects Serious side effects include: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); skin rash, itching, or bumps; depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts; seizures; yellowing of the skin or eyes; or unusual bruising or bleeding. Flulike symptoms (fever, chills, sweating, muscle aches, tiredness) are likely to occur. They are most common at the start of therapy and may decrease with continued use. Other less serious side effects include: headache; nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite; weakness; dizziness or drowsiness; or redness, pain, bruising, or swelling at the injection site.
