Phenelzine, Nardil Description Phenelzine is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) used as an antidepressant drug. Action MAO inhibitor Indications atypical depression, major depression, migraine prophylaxis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobic disorder, psychotic depression, Side Effects agitation, angina, appetite stimulation, blurred vision, confusion, constipation, diaphoresis, dizziness, drowsiness, ejaculation dysfunction, elevated hepatic enzymes, fatigue, fever, headache, hyperreflexia, hypertension, hypertensive crisis, impotence, insomnia, intracranial hemorrhage, mania, mydriasis, myoclonia, nausea/vomiting, orgasm dysfunction, orthostatic hypotension, palpitations, peripheral edema, photophobia, photosensitivity, priapism, SIADH, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, tremor, urinary retention, weakness, weight gain, withdrawal, xerostomia, Drug-Vitamin-Herb Interactions Negative interactions: Asian ginseng One report reported that Asian ginseng (Panax) combined with phenelzine caused headaches and trembling. Ephedra Ephedra contains ephedrine. MAO inhibitors block the degradation of epinephrine. Combining both may cause hypertension. Green tea Green tea contains caffeine which promotes the release of catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine). 5-HTP 5-HTP may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome associated with MAO inhibitors. SAMe SAMe may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome associated with MAO inhibitors. Scotch broom Scotch broom contains tyramine, which can elevate blood pressure when combined with MAO Inhibitors. St JohnÕs Wort St JohnÕs Wort may elevate serotonin levels, which increases the risk of serotonin syndrome associated with MAO Inhibitors. Positive interactions: Vitamin B6 MAO inhibitors attach to and disable vitamin B6.
